We finally got a break away from stresses here to go see my awesome brother get married. Steve couldn't have chosen a better time for us, as May is the least favorite time of the year for me. Oregon's rain gets to you, so this trip was long awaited. We were excited to be vacationing.
My sister Shelley had planned everything this year and had us visiting most of the New England area. There was so much to cover in only a few days, but we were glad we got to see some of the U.S. historical places. Sadly, I don't have those pictures yet. We did get to see Bunker Hill and walk up the 294 steps of it's monument. I started a little too eager, running up the first100 and then crawling up the rest. ;) Prego Shelley made it up and almost had the baby on the way down.
Reed loved the boats we got to see most of all. The USS Constitution was pretty sweet to look at but as it was raining we only had enough time to take pictures and move on. We did discover that "Old Ironsides" is is the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world today, as early as 1790's. It was more intimidating than the Mayflower, which we saw the next day. Yet, the Mayflower was only 100 feet long, holding more than 100 people and back in 1600's. It was a warship, but still neat to see.Without mom we were left to take our own pictures. That is why I have a lot more pictures of Plymouth Plantation. We started by checking out the museum and trying authentic Pilgrim like food. I really enjoyed the succotash, but you can see how happy Cole was eating it.
The coolest part had to be meeting up with the people that were dressed, or even acting out the part of the people during those times. There was a tribal village with a Indian in every hut, as well as a Pilgrim village with actors playing the parts so well. They were playing parts of people who had really lived back then and had started gardens, made the huts, etc.
This was interesting to me as I am a descendent of one of the chiefs who traded with the Pilgrims there, Chief Massasoit. He looks just like me.
We wanted to buy souvenirs but the only thing I really liked there was their old school guns, worth 50 dollars. Almost bought it, but saw Reed's face and decided otherwise.Reed tried on one of the Pilgrims outfits that were laying about, not sure if we were allowed but no one stopped us. Can't say they were all that flattering, but he can pull it off well. My favorite is the helmet, who came up with this idea.
We got to stay two nights on the coast. It was cold, something we are used to in Oregon, but really pretty. As we were really busy we didn't get as much time to check out the area, but got a couple of pictures walking a path nearby. Not to mention we had to make time for lobster night. All that sat infront of us was a 5lb lobster and some shell breakers. I love seafood!!!
That trip made us smile. Can't wait to do it again.
